HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin January 19, 1999
Here we are on the flip side of the meeting and here's the news:

  1. We welcome back Dave Allred, N1EXQ to the HWC. Dave is once again a member in good standing for this school year with dues paid and keys in hand. Dave has agreed to follow-up with W1GSL about the HWC share from the last flea season. We can use some more positive cash flow! All e-addresses are in the header, Dave. Feel free to explore the domain and IP issues, as discussed.

  2. Tonight we had Dave Smith (K1XQ), Nick Guydosh (N2MSE), Bill Vetterling (KO1O), Dave Allred (N1EXQ) and myself (K3UOC). Frank had to cover a lab and Maryanne was with us in spirit. Let's call that (with just a little hype) a 100% turnout. It was like the old days, Maury!

  3. We talked about lots of different issues including our heater service people (stood us up for the second time today. . .what a hapless bunch these people are); carpeting (swatches coming on Friday; installation next week); cleaning (buffing things up for the Friday photo shoot); the CQ photo (all on schedule for a 1:30 shoot); QSL cards (thanks to Dave Smith for the excellent photo enlargements; and to Dave again, Nick, and Bill for suggestions for the obverse blurb); and sprinklers (we can learn to live with them).

  4. A little more on the Friday photo for (Frank's benefit) -- Larry is planning to hit Cambridge around 1:30 on Friday. I'll talk him in on 6.52 and help him get the camera, strobes, etc. set up. When we're ready (guessing 2:15-2:30 PM) I will call you in Adams house to come over to the club. The same for Nick in Leverett. That way, you can zip in and zip out w/o wasting a lot of time during setup. So, just standby Frank, and I'll call you when we're ready. Nick is checking with his roommate to see if he would like to be in the photo as our third operator. Nick doesn't think there will be a problem enlisting him. This fellow is actually interested in ham radio and I sent Nick back with a new copy of "Now You're Talking" to whet his appetite. This photo can benefit us in many ways. KYFC for a good session. One good picture is worth. . .

  5. Dave Smith worked some CW DX, so at least one of us did get on the air at the meeting. I hope in the future we can have more reports such as this. Dave had a heading on an XQ who was working CW split. But the guy was too fast for his own good. He came back with a "1?" when Dave called him and replied with a "TU" after Dave's transmission. Those of us in the DX Biz would like to strangle operators such as this. We have no way of knowing if this guy was actually worked or not (unless they have a web site and are uploading logs). Lousy CW work still plagues too many DXpeditions. World-class DXpeditions and good operators confirm each call before moving on to the next contact.

  6. Bill passed on to me a certificate that had come to the HWC for my 1994 PJ8H operation in the ARRL DX CW Contest. I set a new world record in the all-band, low-power category in this contest. Unfortunately, so did 2 others. I finished third. This is what I was telling you about, Maury, so I can relate to your WW finish this past year.

That's the news. Look forward to seeing all again on the 26th. We're rolling again! The HWC is alive and kicking.

    73,
    Mike, K3UOC
