HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin
January 26, 1999
Another good meeting this evening. First a little recent history: We had one FB photo shoot at the club this past Friday. TNX to Larry Mulvehill from CQ for making it happen. Frank, Nick and Dennis (a new freshman member) were on hand for shots in the shack, in the clubroom, and on the roof. Larry was very pleased with everything and had no problems (technical or otherwise). We presented him with a W1AF mug and a history of the club and he presented us with 1999 ham calendars--he did all the photos. A good experience for everyone. Look for the CQ cover in 3 months or so. Here's hoping that this will help, in some small way, to advance collegiate amateur radio.

  1. We had some water damage in the clubroom from last week's heavy ice and rain. Water got in through holes/fissures in the roofing membrane and discolored parts of our recently painted ceiling. Fortunately, the construction people were willing to repair the roof problems and did so. This evening, I repainted the affected areas with an oil-based primer made to cover water damage. We'll give that a chance to set up and then cover the primer with a coat of regular ceiling paint. That should do the trick.

  2. We welcome Dennis Feehan (KD4SBN) as a new member of the HWC. Dennis is a Harvard Freshman and lives in Wigglesworth, right across from the HWC. We are thrilled to have found him (and he us) and wish him a long and productive association with W1AF.

  3. Tonight, we had Bill (KO1O), Dave Smith (K1XQ), Dave Allred (N1EXQ), and myself at the meeting. The undergrads are on mid-term break and will be next week as well. KO1O and K1XQ ran positions one and two simultaneously on 40 and 20 CW with no interference. Franz Josef Land, Thailand, the Ukraine, and Oregon (mobile) were worked. Spots were flying furiously on Packet-Cluster from Asia and the Pacific. W1AF was heard 'round the globe and across the continent this evening. How's that for 1950's reportage :-) Remember when radio was real magic?

  4. We're still crawling ahead slowly on the carpet and heating unit issues. Dealing with these particular tradespeople ain't a whole lot of fun. More next week.

  5. Heading over to Typotech tomorrow with the new QSL mock-ups.

  6. N1EXQ returned the old hard disk to the club containing a number of logs from years' past. The new logging program file is named and can be accessed from the desktop from either computer.

  7. Bill and I talked about activating W1AF for the ARRL DX CW on 2/20/21. We're itching to get back into contest mode from the club. If we do the test, it will be a casual effort as we are both tied up with other things. It sure would be fun, though. Dave & Dave are otherwise preoccupied at that time. I heard W4AN gearing up for the CQ 160 CW this coming weekend. We're going to have to get W1AF on 160 in the future. What a great contest that one is! I'll be in PA at W3DXR (DXRadio) for the ARRL DX SSB in March.

Next meeting Tuesday February 2nd, 7:00PM.

    73,
    Mike, K3UOC
