HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin
March 2, 1999
We had another well-attended club meeting last night, and there was plenty to discuss. I'll try to keep it brief.

  1. Let me start by saying that Dave preceded the meeting with a QSO with Easter Island. Good work!

  2. Results are coming in on the CW portion of the ARRL DX Contest. So far, W1AF stands at #11 in the country in the Multi-single category. The sideband portion of this contest is this weekend, starting at 7PM on Friday and ending at 7PM on Sunday. We are planning to make a steady appearance in this contest, with the following volunteers for time at the Microphone:

Dave: Friday night or Saturday AM
    		also Sunday afternoon
    	Frank: Saturday 10-12 AM
    	Nick:	Saturday 12-2 PM
    	Bill: Sunday 8-12 AM
    	Mike: Saturday 2-5 PM?

We will set up a log and the packet cluster on Friday night, and everything will be left running throughout the weekend (including the radios). If you find you can fill in any of the empty hours, please do so! We had a brief CT training session at the meeting -- just remember 2 things:

ALT-H toggles the Help on and off
ALT-F1 cycles through the bands. Don't forget
to do this when you change bands on the
    		rig

The station is working great these days. With the improved grounding of both our station and of the building, we are operating a kW on all bands with no complaints.

  3. You all know that the club room sustained a water-type insult from a crew working on the new fire sprinkler. I am happy to report that the room cleaned up nicely, and the equipment is back to normal, except for one computer keyboard that did not react well to being filled with cruddy water.

  4. The HWC Web site and mailing list is back on the air, thanks to efforts by Frank. It is thought that HCS is a good home for this page because they give us two free mailing lists. A request has been filed to give access to the site to Phil Temples, who will share some of his WWW expertise and bring it up to date. Phil tells us that he has been looking on the net for broken links to the former site, and has been getting them corrected. If you see any, please do the same. Phil is also going to put a link to the site on the main Harvard web page.

  5. The first round of budget decisions by the finance committee has ended, and they have offered us a commitment of $200. We are going to need much more to complete the restoration of our second antenna. Frank will be attending a second-round interview and will try to make a strong case for increasing the grant.

  6. Frank has been contacted by one of the Harvard news organizations (I think the Gazette) for an interview. This will be a good opportunity to show off the renovations and to kick of the celebration of the 90th year as the country's oldest radio club.

  7. Conway Yee is back, and has had a chance to meet the new members. Conway has done yeoman's work in keeping an HWC presence at the MIT Flea Market, for which we give him our great thanks. The money will be welcome support for our projects. We will provide him with new keys, email contact, and one of the new member rosters. Welcome back, Conway!

  8. We are all biting at the bit, waiting for the new QSL's. We have answered all current QSL requests until we ran out of the old cards, and we have only a small collection awaiting replies. Frank has suggested that we also use some of the new QSLs as the basis for some posters around campus to advertise the presence of the club. We need to let more undergraduates know where we are.

That's all for now. Have fun in the contest this weekend!
