HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin
April 6, 1999

Hello HWC:

Another very busy week with a full agenda of discussion items at this evening's meeting. Present were Frank, Phil, Dave A., Mary Ellen, Nick, Bill and myself. This ties our year's record for largest attendance! Carve out those Tuesday evenings for the HWC—with so many things going on, the club needs all the support it can get. Here's the news:

  1. I met with W1GSL re: the Flea this past Wednesday. Steve turned over our 1998 proceeds and passed on a hefty stack of April Flea flyers. These were distributed to all at the meeting for spreading around campus and around various workplaces. We should have the Flea posters tomorrow; I'll let you know when they're in, Frank. We all discussed the best means to mobilize the HWC for this season. Phil offered to take charge of notifying people and getting commitments to work the flea on a monthly basis. Give some thought whether you can work the April 18 Flea as Phil will be seeking sign-ups very soon. Our goal is to have at least 3 HWC work every Flea this season.

  2. Right up there with the Flea story is our planning for the Mass QSO Party. I've been in touch with the organizers in Framingham and they are pleased that we'll be taking part this year. A set of contest rules and the multiplier list made the rounds tonight. We'll work Multi-Multi (with the addition of the new HF antennas) and should be capable of putting 4 stations on the air at once. We'll do operator scheduling at the next meeting. May 1 & 2, 20 hours only. Let's do a great operation!

  3. Our third hot item of the week didn't generate much heat due to time constraints -- reviewing the draft of the Articles and Bylaws for the club. This issue was tabled for future discussion. Once again, feel free to generate your input via e-mail or via the HWC-List. Our structural documents really should be in order by the end of this school year.

  4. Matt and Andy from XX Towers will be here on Monday at 8:00 AM to begin assembly of the beams and then to finish the tower and hoist the beams into position. I ordered the missing parts for the 6 Meter beam today from Cushcraft. There are @50 missing pieces of 14 different types. Sure makes me wonder what happened to this stuff. Anyway, we should have the replacement items by Friday.

  5. This Sunday at 9:00 AM, K9HI, myself and Dave Allred will do the pre-assembly work of the antennas up on the roof. Hopefully Nick & Frank will be able to swing by and lend a hand. We should be able to knock this off in a couple of hours. Basically, we need to get all the parts organized so that XX can start right in on assembly when they arrive.

  6. Frank; Bill & I need to know if the club accounting for the year is due in the undergraduate office at the end of this school year or at the beginning of next school year. Can you find that out? Also, be sure and keep close tabs on the UC Grant. We can't afford to let that one slip away.

  7. As you know, we picked up a "new" Icom 751 this past week for $200. Edson is very interested in this for his weak signal project; Phil sees it as a Field Day rig; I see it as a 3rd HF rig in the MAQP. We'll spread it around, don't worry. The rig is being brought over to the club on Wednesday 4/7.

  8. Also tabled this week, Edson's ideas for the weak signal station and for the satellite station. Perhaps we can discuss these ideas next meeting.

  9. All front door swipe cards are now working. We had problems with only one card and that was because we reported the university ID incorrectly. It should be fine tomorrow, Phil.

  10. Alumni swipe cards were passed out to Dave A., Bill & Mary-Anne and one was sent off to Maury yesterday. We should be 100% now on front door access. Edson still needs a clubroom key and Conway has not picked up any keys. Other than that, we're 100% on access to all areas.

  11. With the addition of the $500 check from K3USC, we're now at $6,238.17 in the HWC account.

  12. YCCC has again invited HWC operators to join the top contest club in the country. KO1O and myself are interested in joining. I hope K1XQ, Nick, and Frank are also interested. We talked about this at the meeting and will bring it up again next time. KV1W, Joe Fitzgerald, the Boston area manager for the YCCC would like to come to a meeting to do a presentation about Yankee Clipper and to sign up new members. Dave, Frank, Nick are you interested?

  13. I bought a copy of TRLog today and installed it on two computers. With additional data and config files written by K1HT, we now have an excellent logging program for the MAQP. We'll spend some time reviewing the program at the next meeting.

  14. At the meeting, we confirmed Tuesday, May 4 as our first VE session. I will order materials to field-stock us for this and future exams. Mary Ellen confirmed that she will indeed be ready for a code and theory exam at that time and we will also take walk-ins. Phil will promote the testing on our web site and I'll get a blurb into the Gazette. Spread the word about the testing session.

  15. No feedback heard regarding the draft duties for President/VP/Station Manager/Trustee. Assuming this to be tacit approval, we'll talk at an upcoming meeting about how to best incorporate these guidelines into our structural documents for the club.

  16. Phil is following up with K1TWF, our NE Assistant Division Director about inviting him to a meeting on 4/27. This should make for a very interesting session. I'll be away for the 4/20 meeting myself, doing a little vacation down in Florida. Either Bill or Phil will pick up the minutes for that meeting.

  17. N1EXQ is still looking into getting OCR software for the club. He also returned the "1AF" QSL to the club. Now we'll get it framed and back on the wall in the shack.

  18. Both K9HI & N1EXQ received VE packets this evening. Phil just needed the VE Manual and Dave will be taking the exam and applying for his ARRL VE certification.

  19. I turned over a set of shack & clubroom keys to Scott Haywood, the building manager. He needs these for security purposes and for monitoring the various utility systems that run through the shack. Scott has been very helpful to us with the swipe card system. Look for Scott at the first Flea. I gave him a flyer today. Another dollar saved!

  20. Bill & Phil are coordinating on scanning the WB2ZPI slides for future use on our home page. I'll work out any copyright issues with the photographer.

  21. Check out the web site for new photos in the postwar section and updates in the news column. Still lookin' better than good! Phil, Frank & I discussed strategies for dealing with inquiries via w1af@harvard.edu. We each have specific types of inquiries we will respond to.

  22. I've been carrying on a correspondence with Tom, KE6YNH out in California concerning the origin of the word "Ham." Tom is really hooked on the quest and wanted to prove/disprove the old Hyman, Almy, Murray story. As a consequence, we agreed at the meeting that it would be interesting to have the story on our web site -- not as fact but as interesting local lore. It's a popular story, even if it is a myth. Look for the Origin of Ham Radio story soon.

  23. The question was raised this evening about summer meetings. My position on this is that we follow the university calendar and that meetings are adjourned over the summer. However, you have access to the station at all times, so use the facilities at your leisure. I suggest we continue regular meetings through the 1st of June and then go into recess, starting up again in September. That just about does it for this week. Hope to see everyone at the next meeting, Tuesday, April 13, 7:00PM. Big planning session for both the Flea and for the MAQP.

    73, Mike
    K3UOC
