HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin June, 1999

Hello HWC:

Yes, we're officially in recess but the news is starting to pile up so I want to keep all of you in the loop. Here's hoping all are having a good summer so far. BTW, Happy Father's Day to our several HWC dads! And now the news:

  1. HWC officially welcomes Paul Horowitz, W1HFA as Faculty Advisor to the HWC. We've been talking about our vacant FA position for some time and consensus has been that it's important for us to establish this link with the university once again. With Paul's busy schedule, we don't expect him to be real active in HWC affairs but he has agreed to speak to the club from time to time about his research and interests. We've added Paul to the hwc-list. You can contact him at . We couldn't have picked a better guy, I'm sure of it.

  2. Today's June Flea was a big success! The gate looked a bit slow initially but the buyers just kept coming. . .and coming. East Coast Communications had a large display so ham radio was pretty well represented today. I was on the lookout for a used D-104 for the Heath Apache. I found a fellow with several new Astatic mics but his prices were too high. Sooner or later I'll run across a chrome Silver Eagle for the club. Between N1EXQ, K9HI and myself we put in 15.5 hours -- a little down from last month when we had 5 HWC represented, but still a respectable effort today. N2JWQ made a token appearance but was pretty burnt from all night doctoring, so we'll see Conway in July for his usual marathon flea stint. So far we've had at least three HWC at each flea so let's work hard to maintain momentum over the next several (difficult) months.

  3. This past week I bought twenty-five 4" x 6" x 11" card file boxes for our extensive QSL collection. Then I rebuilt the old magazine shelving to hold the boxes and labeled each box as W1AF, PJ1A or US1A. Looks great upstairs next to the Heath twins! Of course, the cards are not yet sorted and that's going to be a big job. Bill has graciously volunteered to sort PJ1A in alpha order, I'll take on US1A, and K1XQ has been nominated to put W1AF in DXCC order. This is a project long overdue.

  4. The deadbolt lock on the clubroom door failed last week. Basically, it was a cheap lock (a pox on C.E. Floyd) so I replaced it with a new, quality dead bolt lock. Once again (apologies to K1VR) pick up your new key at the club.

  5. Six meters was wide open yesterday (Saturday). I worked a whole string of stations up and down the eastern seaboard on both SSB and CW. The A-5S works great and if you haven't tried the "magic band" yet, you should make it a point to do so.

  6. Last week I sent out a number of PR announcements to the amateur media about our 90th Special Event, October 2&3. I also sent QST the Gazette photo from last March of N3OQB and N2MSE. Steve Ford, the Managing Editor, has it scheduled to run in the October "Up Front" column with a note on the special event. Those dusty HWC will recall that we had a similar photo in "Up Front" of the October 1989 issue of QST with W3EF operating the station as a plug for the 80th.

  7. Tomorrow (6/21) Richard Brown, a former member of the club, will be coming over to the HWC to renew his membership. Last time around (4-5 years ago) Richard was a research associate. This time he returns as a faculty member at HMS. I believe his call is KE0MI.

  8. This reminds me that dues for the 1999-2000 school year are welcome at any time between now and the beginning classes in the fall. $10 for undergrads and $25 for all others.

  9. Keep checking the club web site. We still have new and interesting things going up all the time. Phil recently posted a Field Day article and a handful of W1AF photos from the old days. Which reminds me that Field Day is coming up this weekend! Both BARC and MIT have invited HWC members to stop by and join in the fun. BARC will be setup in Brookline (see Phil's teaser) and MX will be across from the Student Union on Mass Ave. CU There!
