HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin September 23, 1999

Hello HWC:

Just a few notes about the upcoming Special Event. First of all, congrats to Dave, N1EXQ for taking over the reins as Interim Station Manager. From one Interim Station Manager to another -- good luck! Excellent turnout at the 9/21 meeting. Tnx to old W1AF hands K1VR and W1HFA for attending. Regards to Goran and Simon, both of whom were frequent contacts from HZ. Also, thanks for the birthday wishes at the Tuesday meeting. Had a nice day on Tuesday with Lee & little Miss Molly. I'm catching up to KO1O who, coincidentally, shares a birthday with Molly -- a few years apart, of course.

  1. You have probably already seen the W1AF photo in the Up Front section of the October QST. And then on p. 85 is the Special Event announcement w/details.

  2. Yesterday (9/22) October CQ hit subscribers mailboxes. I haven't seen it yet but several people have told me about the issue and it sounds pretty much we had planned -- cover shot, article, photos, QSL card, sidebar article, special event details. The fellow who lists magazine contents on CQ-Contest and other reflectors was amazed that there was an accompanying article to the CQ cover. Apparently, that's a first.

  3. League members who are signed on to ARRL Members Only should check the WebExtra 'zine. W1AF was the 9/22 lead story. Rick Lindquist pieced together information from our site and wrote an article entitled "Harvard's W1AF: 90 Years Old and Going Strong." The story links under the VERITAS shield and there are several accompanying photos in the text.

  4. Dave suggested some Gazette coverage for the event. The fact is, the March 22nd article in the Gazette actually was our 90th coverage. I think we'd do better with the Crimson, not to mention we'll reach more students that way. I'll contact the Crimson and arrange for some coverage.

  5. Here's the status of special event operators to this point:

    Bill, KO1O - full coverage both days;
    Mike, K3UOC - full coverage both days;
    Paul, W1HFA - Saturday, as much as he can;
    Nick Guydosh, N2MSE - looks like 4-8PM Saturday and 12-4PM Sunday;
    Dave Allred, N1EXQ - unsure of operating times as of yet;
    Nick Akers, KC6TAH - unsure of operating times as of yet;
    Conway, N2JWQ - unsure of operating times as of yet;
    Fred, K1VR - may have a conflict but trying to free up some time to operate;
    Maury, W3EF - will be looking to work W1AF from the UK;
    Dave Smith, K1XQ - unavailable;
    Phil, K9HI - unavailable;
    Richard, KE0MY - no response yet;
    Edson, N1VTN - no response yet;
    Mary-Anne, N1TDI - no response yet;
    Geoff, KB1DSM - no response yet;
    Frank, N3OQB - no response yet.

    As you can see, we're not there yet. I hope to hear from everyone soon! This is an event you don't want to miss, believe me.

  6. I'm working on the operating guidelines for the special event now. I'll send a copy to each of you shortly. I hope you have had a chance to review the Virtual Tour text. Review the VT and speak with authority about W1AF! Look for the VT on our web site shortly. Thanks Phil.

Finally, we've just learned that some gear from Carter's estate may be coming to the HWC soon. This sure leads me to believe that W1TCD is still looking out for us. More to follow later on this development.

73,
Mike, K3UOC
