Hello HWC,
Ordinarily I'm a fan of DX contests. However, the SS is a real
interesting contest in that it brings out a tremendous number of stateside
operators, many of whom are operating under their own call signs. I had fun
scanning the special event log for well-known calls and so I did the same
with Bill's SS CW log. Here's an annotated list of calls that I think you'll
find interesting. So who did Bill work?
- N5KO - Trey Garlough of HC8N fame and founded the CQ-Contest reflector
- K4OJ - Jim White, son of W1DX and W1YL; maintains a M/M station in FL
- W4AN - Bill Fisher's station operated in the SS by K4BAI, John Laney
- K4VX - Lew Gordon, ARRL Division Director and owner of a M/M station
- K7RAT - Boring ARC, operated in the SS by Larry Tyree, N6TR of TRLog
- KH7R - Hawaii's top contest station, operated in the SS by Mike Gibson, KH6ND
- KL7Y - Dan Robbins, operator of Alaska's top contest station
- W6YX - Stanford ARC, current high score in the Collegiate Championship
- N2IC - Steve London's very loud Colorado mountaintop station
- W6UE - Caltech ARC, 2nd highest score in the Collegiate Championship
- K1TO - Dan Street, winner of the World Amateur Radio Championship
- W8EDU - Case Western ARC in Ohio
- W1WEF - Jack Schuster, for many decades a fierce contest competitor
- N8BJQ - Steve Bolia, Director of the CQ WPX Contest
- K5ZD - Randy Thompson, veteran contester and contest editor from Uxbridge, MA
- K3CR - Penn State ARC, piloted in the SS by KB3AFT from the WA3FET QTH
- K3ZO - Fred Laun, a top scorer and entrant in virtually all contests
- W4ATC - NC State ARC, sponsors the School Plaque for the ARRL in SS
- W6BAB - Pasadena City College, a new SS entrant
- K1EA - Ken Wolff, software designer, superstation owner, former W1AF operator
- W4PA - Scott Robbins, chief executive at TenTec down in Tennessee
- W4AQL - GA Tech ARC
- K1AR - John Dorr, perennial winner of the CQWW and Contest editor for CQ
- W5ASP - Joe Staples, DXpeditioner and NCJ columnist
- WA1S - Ann Santos, low power aficionado and excellent contester
- K1VUT - Dave Clemons, low power aficionado from EMA
- K1ZZ - Dave Sumner, Executive Secretary of the ARRL
- VO1MP - Gus Samuelson, first NA signal heard in EU in every DX contest
- N6ZZ - Phil Goetz, plans to be the first to work the CQWW from all 40 zones
- W6OAT - Rusty Epps, organizer of the 1994 WARC and many DXpeditions
- N5XU - U. Texas ARC, organizers of the Collegiate Championship
- N9UC - U. of Chicago ARC, worked the SS QRP
- K3WW - Charles Fulp, top Assisted op in the US
- KP2N - Only VI station in the SS. Ask Bill about the pileup!
- W0OF - this fellow is obviously a dog-lover. . .woof!
- K1KI - Tom Frenaye, our NE Division Director and M/M station owner
- W2GD - John Crovelli from P40W, many DX contest victories
- W9RE - Mike Wetzel, biggest signal ever out of Indiana
