HWC Shield Harvard Wireless Club Bulletin, January 28, 2000

Hello HWC,

Happy 2000! I am pleased to tell you that W1AF (and much of the rest of the world) has survived the Y2K bug. Another obstacle overcome. Y2K all seems rather silly in retrospect, however last month I can bet you were making contingency plans just as I was.

Tim McBride, N1QZY, is once again the Station Manager for the Harvard Wireless Club, effective the first of this year. Tim takes over for Dave Allred who has served in an interim capacity since this past September. Thanks to N1EXQ for a job well-done and best wishes to Tim on managing our club.

The Harvard Wireless Club now has incoming fax capability through the (free) services of efax.com. This is something that Phil set up for us last year but, for whatever reason, the system never worked correctly. After a little troubleshooting with the efax tech support people, I've finally got it straightened out.

This is for incoming faxes only. Let's say you're dealing with a manufacturer or supplier and they offer to send the club information by fax. Or if you need to get a message to the club and, for whatever reason, leaving a message on the answering machine doesn't do the trick. Fax the Harvard Wireless Club either by conventional fax or computer fax. Our fax number is (603) 719-0115. A copy of the fax is then sent as an attachment to <w1af@harvard.edu>. Mail from that account is forwarded to me at <k3uoc@aol.com> so any fax that comes through, I will bring to the attention of the appropriate parties at the HWC. Now if we just had an active web site, we could list this information on our pages at well.

I want to remind you that you are reading this note via an open list sponsored by the Harvard Computer Society. Any information that you would like to get out to all members of the HWC, send it via <hwc-list@hcs.harvard.edu>. Another interesting list-serve is the Ham-Univ Collegiate Reflector sponsored by Stanford University. I can pass on the administrative address to anyone who is interested. There is a spirited discussion going on there now about the extent to which our new ARRL president might be attuned to collegiate radio.

You will note this e-mail is coming to you from w1af@aol.com. I grabbed this screen name from AOL when v.5 was released which allowed for 4-character screen names. Better we own it than anyone else. Consider this to be a good vanity callsign on the world's largest ISP. I will hold on to it so that no one else grabs it (intentionally or otherwise).

Coming up faster than you would believe: the ARRL DX Contest. I am planning a trip to Cambridge in February. I'll keep you posted. A visit to the HWC is certainly on the agenda. In the meantime, I would love to hear from all HWC members about what you are up to this year. Prepare yourself to be bored by the exploits of DXradio (W3DXR) in return.
