KH6IJ
Katashi Nose, GSE '61, KH6IJ (Silent Key) in a letter to the HWC dated
December 14, 1989:
did not operate as much as I wanted due to studies having priority on my time. I do not
recall names of any of the others who were there during my time. I do recall that I organized a
Field Day operation for the club, going to a park (a rather woodsy out of the way place)
somewhere south of Boston. I vaguely recall there being a structure like a water tower which
was utilized in helping to support the antenna which was a dipole. For supper, my XYL had
prepared some barbecue meat (Japanese style), and the tantalizing aroma emanating from our
grill attracted others over to our pit. We offered them the grilled steak. They gave us their hot
dogs.

Katashi Nose was one of the most distinguished amateurs of our time. Old timers still recall his
big signal from KH6 and his flawless, proficient operating style in the DX contests for many
decades. In 1983, Nose was honored as Radio Amateur of the Year at the Dayton Hamvention.
In 1986, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International DX Convention
in Visalia. He was also elected as an honorary member of the Northern California DX Club and
the Western Washington DX Club. We are proud that KH6IJ was a member of the HWC during
his graduate student days at Harvard. He became a SK in 1994.
