W1SOV
Joe Frank, '56, W1SOV, in an e-mail to the HWC dated September 22, 1999:
just received my October 1999 CQ and relished reading your article on the history of W1AF.
I had been licensed three years as W1SOV when I entered Harvard College in 1952, and I was
a member of HWC during my four years as an undergraduate. I was not an active member
because I was preoccupied with intercollegiate debate as a member of the Harvard Debate
Council, but I have never lost my interest in amateur radio and am presently active on HF
bands and 2 meters.
"A few days ago I wrote HWC to bemoan my impending absence from my home QTH from October 1
to October 4. Hope to have an opportunity at some other time to work W1AF and receive the
anniversary QSL card.
"I remember Carter Pfaelzer very well. He was very nice guy and a very competent
technician. He designed and built a nifty RTTY unit which he showed me."

"Greetings to all,
Congratulations to all of the other upgraders. I'm another. Having become a General in
1949 and an Advanced in 1951, I took Element 4B on January 14 this year and upgraded to
Extra on April 18 here in Vermont. Looks like there will be a lot of less- than- 20 w.p.m.
Extras trying to squeeze into the 25 kHz segments!
