Phases of Matter and Pressure
Fifth grade Chemistry lesson
Liaison: Andrea Kurtz
Date: 03/16/99
Group Members: Dena Springer and Helen Lo
School: Agassiz
Teacher: Susan Hughes
Materials:
One per group: 2L soda bottle balloon drinking straw
Procedure:
1. Start off by introducing the 3 phases of matter. 2. Have the students act out solids, liquids, and gases (by holding hands and linking arms, etc.). 3. Have the students act out how solids change to liquids and then to gases and vice-versa. 4. Finally, talk about pressure by putting the gas people in a confined corner of the room. Experiment 1. Divide students into groups, unless class is small enough that experiment can be done on an individual basis. 2. Give each group or child one empty 2L soda bottle, balloon, and straw. 3. Investigate pressure by having the kids try to blow up balloons held inside the soda bottles (i.e., hold neck of balloon over neck of bottle, allowing balloon to hang in the bottle), which they won't be able to do. 4. Have the kids then put straws in the mouths of the bottle and then try to blow up the balloons, and it works. 5. Explain how the straw lets out air and pressure so that the balloon can inflate.
Evaluation:
Student participation in demonstrations will help them to retain concepts.
