Materials:

Clear Cups
Salt
Hot chocolate
Hot pot

Procedure:

In this lesson we wish to show the kids how temperature effects solubility. When a liquid
is heated, substances such as sugar and salt should dissove better, We will have various cups of
water with differing temperatures. We will then carefully put spoonfuls of salt. We will
ask the kids which cup of water they think can dissolve the most amount of salt. The water
with the greatest temperature should be able to disolve more.
As added bonus we will make hot chocolate. First we will try to sir the hot chocolate in
cold water. It shouldn't disolve very well. We will then pour the mix into hot water.
We will ask the kids why the cocoa dissolves better in the higher temperature. They should
be able to answer this from the previous demonstration. Finally we will review what we have
learned about the different states of matter.
