Sixth grade Chemistry lesson

Liaison: Andrea Kurtz
Date: 12/13/99
Group Members: Greg Sulkowski and Sunana Sohi
School: Tobin
Teacher: Chris Affleck

Materials:

1 cup of whole milk
4 tbsp. of sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 cup salt
a lot of ice (at least 6 cups)
1 gallon sized storage bag
sandwich sized storage bag
duct tape

Procedure:

as in our lesson plan for 4/12/99, we are going to teach the kids about colligative properties, speicifcally freezing point depression.
we'll be using salt to explain the freezing point depression of water, and then use the salt to lower the temperature of ice - we'll place
our ice-cream ingredients in bags inside larger bags full of salt and ice, and roll them on the students desks to mix up the ingredients.
eventually the ice-cream mix should freeze due to the temp. depression.
