Procedure:

Ask students to guess what floats in water and what does not. Then give each group a glass of water to test the ideas through experiment. Keep track of the results on the board and try to formulate a theory explaining how certain things float. (Demonstrate that "big" things don't necessarily sink.) Place an egg in water and watch it sink. Place it in sat'd salt solution and watch it float. (What does this say about their relative specific weights? Then place it in 1/2 salt, 1/2 fresh water and see it stay in the middle. Invite students to explain why it happened.
