Intro & Scientific Method
Fourth grade Physics lesson

Liaison:
Date:
Group Members: Dena Springer and Kevin Daly
School: Agassiz
Teacher: Mrs. Berger

Materials:

dry ice
black insulated container
15 folders

Procedure:

1. We started off with introductions
everyone said their name and favorite cartoon character
2. We passed out folders to every student and had them write their
names on them and then draw a picture that showed what science means
to them. While the kids were drawing, we circulated and asked the kids
about what they were drawing.
3. Next we defined the scientific method by asking the students if they
knew what it was and then introducing its five components and defining
them:
Observation
Hypothesis
Experiment
Results / Data
Conclusion
4. Finally, we did a demo following the scientific method. We added
water to dry ice. Before we added the water we asked for hypotheses.
Then we performed the experiment and looked at the results and we ended
with conclusions about why what we saw happened.
-- we hope to apply the scientific method to the experiments we do in the
future

Evaluation:

-- we hope to expand on and test the ideas of the scientific method
throughout the term
-- also, the folder decorating idea worked well because it gave us
an idea of what they thought science was. Many of the kids drew magic
potions and the like, which is a notion we hope to dispell during this
term as we teach physics of everyday life.
