Materials:

8 optical illusions printed in color
from various optical iilusion Web sites

(any simple and fun optical illusions
would work)

Procedure:

-We started off the leson by talking about receptors and molecules, which has been our
focus for this semester. We talked about how light is the molecule and that our eyes
have receptors for these molecules.
-We asked what types of things our eye receptors detect:
- color
- movement
- form
- We then had them review what we learned from a previous lesson on taste receptors and how
nutrasweet fools tastebuds and the brain into believeing they are tasting sugar.
- We asked what could fool our eyes into seeing something that isn't really there.
- optical illusions
- Next we placed eight optical illusions (that we had printed in color from various Web site)s
around the room forming eight stations. Each optical illusion was taped to a piece of paper
that had a question written on it. The students were instructed to go to each station and
answer the question on the paper as best they could.
- The optical illusions (a) and questions (b) were:
1.a. the word BEAKMAN, but only the top halves of each letter
b. what word do you see?
2.a. 3 line drawing that suggested the presence of shapes but didn't outline the
entire shape ( a triangle, a square, and circles)
b. what do you see in these pictures?
3.a. 2 Mona Lisa paintings that looked the same when viewed upside down, but showed differences
in her eyes when viewed right side up
b. Are there any differences between these two pictures?
4.a. lines that appeared parallel, but weren't
b. Are these lines crooked or straight?
5.a. a picture
