Measuring Magnets
Sixth grade Physics lesson
Liaison: Richard Rivero
Date: 10/25/01
Group Members: Atalie, Vinod
School: Harrington
Teacher: Sharon Hester
Materials:
-Flexible Magnets -Paper Cups -Tongue Depressor -Large paper clip -Small paper clips or washers
Procedure:
1)Students will conduct an experiment designed to test the variable of multiple magnets and the effect on holding strength 2)Student will learn to observe patterns in data and make predicitons 3)The skills learned can be applied to daily situations in the kids' lives.
Evaluation:
Set the two cups upside down close to each other and lay the tongue depressor across. Place one magnet on the tongue depressor and hang a jumbo paperclip from it, beneath the tongue depressor. Slide washers onto the tongue depressor, keeping track of how many can be put on before the large paperclip falls off and is no longer able to hold any more. Repeat the process with 2, 3, 4, and 5 magnets. -Construct a table and a graph showing the data, interpreting the results as a class
